SAFEMUSE WELCOMES RESIDENCE ARTIST

SafeMUSE welcomes residence artist:
GATO's LONG JOURNEY

November 13, 2019

In the spring of 2016 the Guatemalan dancer ‘Gato’, together with the National Sami Theatre institution Beaivvás, received the Norwegian prestigious Hedda Prize for “Particular artistic effort” (Særlig kunstnerisk innsats), as an important performer and ‘supplier of terms’ for the ground-breaking theater production “Vidas Extremas”. They also received the National Critics Award for Best Play of the year.

Now he is back in Norway as the first SafeMUSE residence artist not being a musician, after a long journey.

Break-dancer Carlos David Catun Quintana (‘Gato’) is one of Central America’s foremost dancers, a prize-winning breakdancer from Guatemala, who for the last three years has been staying in Colombia in a safe space sponsored by SafeMUSE, due to death threats from street gangs in Guatemala. After arrival in Norway he is now working with Norway’s best-known professional dance crew, Kingwings Crew, on a production for a festival in early 2020.

A LIFE VERY LITTLE WORTH

Some of SafeMUSE’s followers might have seen our Facebook page for the support of Gato’s case (Før det er for sent – hjelp oss å få Gato til Norge), and through this knows his long and winding road for a secure life as a dancer.

After return home to Guatemala City from Norway in 2016, he received a phone call from someone presenting themselves being from one of the most violent street gangs (Mara Salatrucha – better known as MS 13), saying he was their next on the list. These gangs see the work of dance crews in Guatemala as a competition, because breakdancers are recruiting young potential gang members into the street dance scene instead of them becoming part of criminal gangs. And while Gato was in Norway touring with the ‘Vidas Exstremas’ production, he received the message that one of his close friends and crew members in Guatemala was abducted and killed – by the same gang calling him. So, this was especially difficult since Gato already had nine of his friends being killed by gangs in the past, including his twin brother a few years before. Now he was next on the list.

In the phone conversation Gato was told what streets he tends to hang out in, and what times he had been seen in the various places. Tired and angry about all the suffering the gangs had inflicted on his loved ones, Gato informed the gang that he does not care about them and that he will continue to live his life as before. But in reality, the phone call resulted in Gato closing in for 2 months before leaving for Europe to compete in an internationally recognized event in the Netherlands. A month before departure however, another friend of Gato (also involved in the preparational Vidas Extremas’ workshop process in Guatemala), receives a phone call from someone pretending to be from an elementary school. The lady on the phone says that she has 50 students that she wants to be taught. Gato’s friend is also in Gato’s breakdance crew, ‘502 Poker Crew’, and when he arrives at the agreed location for the workshop, it turns out that no primary school has called, but instead the same criminal gang. The dancer is shot three times, including once in the neck. After a number of operations, he survives the murder attempt. (They specifically asked for Gato to be one of the workshop holders, but since nobody had heard from him in a month the crew didn’t mind asking him.)

When Gato then was in Europe – after all this, friends in Norway got to know about Gato’s situation (- although he hesitated to tell the story), and Nicloai Lopez, producer connected to the Vidas Extremas production, contacted SafeMUSE. In short time we pulled together a six-month residence program for Gato in Norway, and invited him for a safe residency. His visa application was however turned down by the UDI (Norwegian Immigration) on strict formal grounds. This in spite of the regulations opening up for using fair judgement in cases like this. (He applied through the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin where he formally was staying as a tourist, and not from his home country – also having in mind the Norwegian embassy in Guatemala had been closed down half a year earlier.)

BACK TO LATIN AMERICA

Judging the realities around his situation, SafeMUSE sponsored his trip back to Bogota and not Guatemala City. And together with Lopez and the family of dancer Pierro Issa (Colombian dancer based in Norway), we managed to put him up in a safe space in Colombia. This was autumn of 2016. Since then SafeMUSE has covered his stay in relatively secure placements in Colombia, made possible also through fundraising via the Facebook support page. In relatively short time friends in Norway donated almost NOK 100.000 (EUR 10.000)!

Colombia is however a complicated society, and for Gato things turned worse. All the time since his arrival in Colombia it has been a goal to invite Gato back to Norway to work with the Norwegian break-environment and have a possibility to develop his artistic potential. A complaint on the visa refusal in 2016 was turned down. But this year we pulled together a new residence invitation, and his visa application was accepted, and he was given a temporary residence permit. His departure and travel were however to become a nightmare.

AIR CANADA NOT FOR GUATEMALAN DANCERS

Tuesday 15 October Gato had an Air Canada flight from Bogota via Toronto and Heathrow to Oslo. His visa for Norway and Schengen was issued by the UDI 17 September 2019. He was however rejected at check in on the grounds that his transit visa for Canada (eTA) was not stamped into his passport. The eTA is an electronic transit visa linked to the passport number, and should not be stamped in his passport. Even though, he was harshly rejected from the check-in. And the Air Canada personnel at the airport did not either want to speak with us over telephone from Norway, or our contact at the Norwegian embassy in Bogota. He was rejected and was not allowed to travel. (It also goes with the story that Gato is a holder of a US Green Card.)

Due to the feedback we got on our complaints to Air Canada, we chose to buy a new ticket directly into Schengen and Europe with Lufthansa.

FRANKFURT IMMIGRATION FOR PERSISTENT TOUGHS ONLY

His next attempt on departing from Bogota did not either pass without problems, but he managed to get on board his Lufthansa flight via Frankfurt for Oslo on the 23 September. But while in transit during a security check at Frankfurt Airport the day after, he was detained by the Federal Boarder Police for almost four hours for no formal reason. We lost contact with Gato when he was detained shortly before 5 pm. The general information at the airport helped us to call him up at the airport several times with no result. At the same time, we called the police office at the airport, but no one answered. Finally, just after 8, the boarder police called us after being asked several times by Gato to contact the inviting host in Norway. At this point he had been detained for more than three hours. During this time nothing was done from the police to contact us as inviting hosts for clarifying the situation. His onward flight was at that point boarding in 43 minutes.

The police claimed his visa for Norway was not sufficient. He was supposed to have a ‘D-visa’ for Germany. The police officer also claimed his passport would expire shortly after his visit to Norway, and that this was against the visa regulations.

We responded that this is a Guatemalan artist and dancer invited to Norway for a six months artistic residency, and that Norwegian immigration authorities, the UDI, has granted him an appropriate visa/ a temporary residence permit for this purpose. And as long as he is going to Norway and not to Germany, and Norway is a part of the Schengen passport region, a ‘D-visa’ after German law is not relevant.

We also said that his passport is the passport that was used for the visa application and for the given period of his granted stay, and should be valid for this trip. If needed we will assist him to obtain a new passport by Guatemalan authorities while in Norway.

In addition, we also allowed ourselves to remind the police officer that Germany is a part of the 2005 UNESCO-convention on Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. Article 16 – ‘Preferential treatment for developing countries’ reads: “Developed countries shall facilitate cultural exchanges with developing countries by granting, through the appropriate institutional and legal frameworks, preferential treatment to artists and other cultural professionals and practitioners, as well as cultural goods and services from developing countries.”

We informed the police that this is an artist that already has been through a lot, that he is threatened for his life in his home country by street gangs, and that he should be treated with respect and not harassed.

After this conversation it was 10 minutes to boarding. Calling back the Boarder Police at the airport again some minutes later we were told that they had got the confirmation needed from Norwegian Immigration and that our guest now was boarding the aircraft for Oslo.

After Gato’s arrival in Oslo, we got his version of what had happened in Frankfurt. His phone, passport and papers were taken from him, and he was not allowed to call his contacts in Norway before after more than 3 hours. The police spoke to him in English and German. Gato speaks Spanish, and he was denied to use Google Translate to try and understand what was going on. He perceived the situation as very threatening and unpleasant, and he was shown what he considered being the police isolation cell. In addition, after our first telephone conversation with the police, Gato tells that the police report that had been written during his detainment was torn apart and thrown away.

FINALLY IN NORWAY

David ‘Gato’ Catun arrived on time at Gardermoen Airport, Oslo Friday 24 September – tired and relieved. The day after the breakdance-environment in Oslo had prepared a welcome party, and already on the Monday he was in preproduction with the Kingwings Crew.

The way the Norwegian break-dance environment in solidarity has supported and assisted their Guatemalan friend and colleague is impressing and exemplary. And of course, without the enduring support and cooperation with producer Nicolai Lopez this would never have been possible to pull through. In addition, also others have given very valuable support throughout the whole process.

A big thanks to everyone!

SafeMUSE has, following this, an unanswered claim towards Air Canada for an unreserved apology for the way Gato was treated by the Air Canada representatives in Bogota, and claim for a full compensation for our financial loss following the need for a new ticket.

In addition, we put forward a claim for an explanation from the Airport Boarder Police at Frankfurt Airport. Their formal response is just a repetition of what was said over the telephone by the officer in charge on the 24 September.

Gato may be seen on stage with the Kingwings Crew opening the Northern Lights Festival (Tromsø) – January 24th 2020

IMC’s WORLD FORUM ON MUSIC 2019

IMC’s World Forum on Music 2019, Paris:
STANDING FOR ARTISTIC FREEDOM – IN SOLIDARITY

October 7, 2019

During the 6th World Forum on Music focusing on the five music rights, SafeMUSE Project Manager Jan Lothe Eriksen’s gave an introduction to the First Music Right, and all participants raised in solidarity with artistic freedom fighters all over the world, for the Iranian composer, musician and activist Mehdi Rajabian – not able to leave Iran; Iranian singer songwriter Farzane Zamen – exiled in Glasgow, UK; and Ramy Essam – touring the world but not able to return to Egypt.

The International Music Council’s 70th anniversary was marked by the 6th World Forum on Music in Paris last week, focusing on the Five Music Rights. The last day of the conference, coinciding with The International Music Day, the focused was on the First Music Right, the right for all children and adults to express themselves musically in all freedom.

Together with Ian Smith, President of the European Music Council, Jan Lothe Eriksen gave an introduction focusing on the harsh story of Mehdi Rajabian, Iranian composer, musician and founder of the website Barg music, an alternative music distributor in Iran. Barg Music was the main medium broadcasting alternative music in the country and had introduced more than 100 music albums and thousands of single records by Iranian alternative musicians, as well as female singers, to Iranian audiences, before being shut down by Revolutionary Guards in 2013.

Mehdi Rajabian was arrested pursuing illegal musical activities by Iranian security forces on 5 October 2013 in his office and transferred to Ward 2A of Evin Prison, and was sentenced to more than two months in solitary confinement. When Mehdi Rajabian was arrested, he was recording “Research Album of History of Iran narrated by Setar”. His personal studio, all recordings, hard drives of recorded music were confiscated and the project became silent.

Following this came a long story of imprisonment, hunger strike to be given medical treatment, and an international campaign sparked by Freemuse and followed by Amnesty, United Nations Special Rapporteurs on cultural rights, International PEN and many more, causing great international attention and media coverage. More than 20,000 artists from all corners of the world joined the campaign.

The case of Mehdi Rajabian was investigated in summer 2015 in Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court by Judge Mughiseh, and finally he was charged of unauthorized art activity, insulting religious sanctities and advertisement against the regime. He was sentenced for six-year prison and fine. This sentence was on appeal to three years imprisonment in Branch 54 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court and three years of suspended sentence. He has served his three years in prison, and is now serving the last three years. He cannot leave the country, but is still artistically very active.

In March this year he released the album Middle Eastern, a unique project that brought together nearly 100 musicians from across 12 countries.

Mehdi Rajabian´s case is unique. But he is no alone being imprisoned, persecuted, harassed or censored for making music, unfortunately.

Iranian singer songwriter Farzane Zamen, present during the conference in Paris, giving a speech and performing, has her own story.

Egyptian artist and rocker Ramy Essam, also present during the conference in Paris, giving a speech and performing, has his own story. And there are many, many more…

Jan Lothe Eriksen closed his introduction saying:

– Being an artist, censored, harassed, persecuted, prosecuted and imprisoned is in very lonely and terribly difficult situation. So therefore, I ask you, all participants of the 6th IMC World Forum on Music,

supporting the First Right, Freedom of Expression – ‘The right for all to express themselves musically in all freedom’, please stand up…:

– Mehdi, Farzane, Ramy, and all artistic freedom fighters – You are not alone.

ARTISTIC FREEDOM FOR A WEEK IN MARCH

'FRI KUNST 2020' - Artistic Freedom for a week in March

September 27, 2019

After organizing Music Freedom Day in Norway annually every 3rd March since 2015, SafeMUSE have taken the initiative for a one-week marking of artistic freedom in Norway the first week in March 2020. All art-forms – all of Norway.

SafeMUSE is inviting actors in the Norwegian arts and culture field to focus on artistic freedom during the first week of March 2020. Each actor – organizer, organization, institution, club, gallery, library, litteratur house, orchestra, venue, etc. etc. – is encouraged to mark artistic freedom in their one unique way, through their own channels and to their respective audiences. In this way, each individual artist, each institution and organization can talk to their own audience about a topic that concerns us all.

BACKGROUND

Freedom of expression is under threat in many places on the planet. And artistic freedom is no exception. On the contrary. Artists are often in the front line in process of change, and have to endure a great challenges. Globally, the artists are often told to not oppose, not offend, not cause controversy or alternative views and perspectives – and all kinds of issues may cause problems for artists worldwide, like gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, artistic genre, art form and direct or indirect political content. Artists are censored, harassed, threatened, abducted, prosecuted, imprisoned and even killed as a result of their artistic activities. And Europe is no exception. Spain was the country that imprisoned the most musicians in 2017 and 2019 (‘The State of Artistic Freedom 2019’, Freemuse.org).

Based on cases here in Norway in recent years, we believe it is important that a unified Norwegian art field takes a clear stand – and shows that artistic freedom is a fundamental value in our society and for our democracy.

JOINT STATEMENT

Based on a joint statement from the Norwegian Artists Network (‘Kunstnernettverket’) and SafeMUSE, and in cooperation with Freemuse, SafeMUSE is time inviting all forms of art actors to celebrate freedom of artistic expression in the first week of March 2020 under the joint heading ‘Fri Kunst 2020’ – Artistic Freedom 2020.

A large number of artist organizations are behind the initiative together with Association of Norwegian Theatres and Orchestras (Norsk teater- og orkesterforening – NTO) and the Norwegian Cultural Forum (NOKU), and more are invited in – for a national celebration and marking of the importance of artistic freedom all over the world.

Our goal is to lift the focus on freedom of artistic expression, and through this help artists – in all countries – be able to create and practice their art freely, without threats and persecution, for the benefit of the world.

THIS WAS MUSIC FREEDOM DAY OSLO 2019

Thank you all: THIS WAS MUSIC FREEDOM DAY OSLO 2019

March 6, 2019

Artists, activists and organizations gathered together at Kulturhuset down town Oslo Sunday 3rd March celebrating music and art, artistic freedom and solidarity. A broad and diverse program including live performances, film screening and discussions.

At daytime the four first SAFE-videos was screened on the walls of the ground floor main café, and from 17:00 the program was started by Lebanese artist, curator and gallerist Tewa Barnosa, painting the word ‘Tazuri’ (Art) in the Tamazight language, the native language in North African countries such as Libya, Algeria and Morocco. The painting was done directly on a canvas of the SafeMUSE poster-photo by Najma Abukar. The calligraphy performance was accompanied by Oslo-based classical Indian violinist Harpeet Bansal’s soft alap-like introduction. In addition, the Palestinian rapper Khaled Harara performed two of his original rap lyrics. A strong and diverse opening to a full afternoon/ evening program of music and discussion.

Next on the program was a deep felt and beautiful musical meeting between two traditions, traditional Hazara music performed by a highly acknowledged artist Hamid Sakhizada from Afghanistan, now guest artist in Safe Haven Harstad, Norway, brilliantly followed and accompanied by the North Indian classical violin played by Harpeet Bansal.

The seminar part of the event started out with Dr. Srirak Plipat, Executive Director of Freemuse, presenting a sneak peek on some main findings from the upcoming report “The State of Artistic Freedom 2019”:

  • 2017 – 165 cases on music, 2018 – 270 cases: 63 censored, 4 abducted, 22 attacked, 12 detained, 31 imprisoned, 31 prosecuted and 2 musicians killed.
  • Musicians’ rights to artistic freedom are violated in over 50 countries: most cases are found in Nigeria, Turkey and Russia,
  • Over 30 musicians were imprisoned in 2018: leading the field by Spain (14 rappers), China and Egypt,
  • Freemuse recorded threats and harassment to musicians in at least 9 countries: the highest number of cases are in the US,
  • Downward trends as new laws being proposed to tightly control musicians: Uganda, Uzbekistan and Indonesia

This presentation was followed by a panel discussing artistic freedom in the light of the theme “Woman’s rights & LGBT rights are just human rights”. The panel was in addition to Srirak Plipat from Freemuse comprised of Dounia Benslimane, Director of Development & Partnerships, Racines (a Moroccan NGO ordered by court to dissolute); Tewa Barnosa, artist, curator and gallerist; Alexandra Archetti Stølen, Festival Director, Oslo World; and Jude Dibia, Nigerian author and former ICORN writer-in-residence in Malmö City. The conversation was led by Norwegian/ Gambian performance artist, playwright and author Camara Lundestad Joof. (The full launch of the State of Artistic Freedom report will be in Oslo on 26 March at Fritt Ord.)

The Music Freedom Day event on Sunday also concluded the SAFE video-series by SafeMUSE, launching film #5. The final film documents a meeting between Iranian singer songwriter Farzane Zamen and Norwegian artist and former Minister of Culture, Åse Kleveland. The series started out 3rd November last year in the very same venue. The first film with Mai Khoi and Moddy was launched during NRK Jungeltelegrafen’s live Oslo World broadcast, interviewing Mai Khoi.

The program at Kulturhuset 3rd March closed with an inspired and bluesy performance by Sudanese peace singer and former guest artist in the city of Harstad, Abazar Hamid, together with legendary Norwegian blues guitarist Knut Reiersrud, presenting music from the LIDIO-release “We Need Peace”, plus some brand new material.

Then the program concluded at the metal club Rock In with a powerful afterparty. Iranian old school black metal artist, Sina Winter, SafeMUSE’s very first residence artist, and his band From the Vastland (Tjalve, bass; Spektre, drums; and Destructhor, guitar plus Sina, vocal/guitar) took on stage with the music from their very last album “Daevayasna”, inspired by Zoroastrianism, the mythology of Persia and Mesopotamia and the correlations between the texts of Edda (the source of Norse Mythology) and Avesta (the sacred texts of Zoroastrian).

An intense and energetic closure of a worthy, serious, joyful, beautiful and powerful marking of Music Freedom Day 2019 in Oslo – for reflection and inspiration!

The event was organized by SafeMUSE in close cooperation with Freemuse and contributions from Cultur Troms (Troms County Council) and Inferno Metal Festival, and funding from Fritt Ord, Bergesenstiftelsen, Creo, Nopa and The Norwegian Society of Composers.

SafeMUSE is joining forces with Freemuse for the Music Freedom Day event in Oslo 3 March, and together we are inviting for a full afternoon/ evening program at Kulturhuset and Rock In, Oslo, celebrating artistic freedom.

The artistic program includes the major Afghan Hazara artist Hamid Sakhizada and the Oslo based North Indian classical violinist Harpeet Bansal together on stage for the very first time; Sudanese peace singer Abazar Hamid and legendary Norwegian blues guitarist Knut Reiersrud presenting music from the LIDIO-release We Need Peace; and Libyan visual artist and curator Tewa Barnosa presenting her work live.

Seminar: In addition Srirak Plipat, Executive Director, Freemuse will present some major finds in the upcoming Freemuse report ‘The Status of Artistic Freedom 2019’ and also facts from the report published last autumn, ‘Creativety Wronged: How women’s right to artistic freedom is denied and marginalised’. This will be followed by a panel discussion on WOMAN’S RIGHTS & LGBT RIGHTS ARE JUST HUMAN RIGHTS. The panel: Dounia Benslimane, Director of Development & Partnerships, Racines (the Moroccan NGO ordered by court to dissolute); Tewa Barnosa, artist, curator and gallerist; Alexandra Archetti Stølen, Festival Director, Oslo World; and Jude Dibia, Nigerian author and former ICORN writer-in-residence in Malmö City; in addition to Freemuse’s Srirak Plipat.

.SAFE: The event concludes the SAFE video-series with the launch of SAFE video #5, and presentations of the other videos as well.

The afterparty at the club Rock In presents Iranian black metal artist and former SafeMUSE residence artist Sina and his band From the Vastland.

More information and full program at www.musicfreedomday.no

Organized by SafeMUSE and Freemuse. Supported by Fritt Ord, Bergesenstiftelsen, CREO, NOPA and The Norwegian Society of Composers. The afterparty is organized in cooperation with Inferno Metal Festival.

SAFE #4: ABAZAR & BUGGE

SAFE #4: ABAZAR & BUGGE

February 21, 2019

Abazar Hamid is the Sudanese peace singer that was driven away from his country because of the music he made. On a January morning he met with world renown pianist Bugge Wesseltoft to share what they both have dedicated their life to – music…

The video has already been out since 3 February at www.safeseries.no, and a new video will be launched 3 March – on Music Freedom Day!

Abazar A. Bagi Hamid arrived in Harstad on 10 December 2014 as the first ICORN musician to be hosted by the city. Since his arrival in Norway he continued his work with music, amongst them the Orpheus project. 1 February he released the EP “We Need Peace” – produced by renowned guitarist Knut Reiersrud. The EP is his first release since arriving in Norway, released on the SafeMUSE label LIDIO.

Since the early 1990 ́s Bugge Wesseltoft has made an impressive, truly post-modern transition from his ECM nordic jazz traditions. Playing and recording together with the likes of Jan Garbarek, Sidsel Endresen, Terje Rypdal, Nils Petter Molvaer, Jon Eberson to forming his own innovative New Conception Of Jazz group and exquisite label Jazzland Recordings. Wesseltoft is multi-decorated with critics prizes for creating a unique, fresh blend of “modern jazz”.

SAFE, Stories About Arresting Music is focusing on artistic freedom as a basic human right, but a right that is not afforded to all of us. In Norway, most artists can enjoy this right and this freedom, but in countless other places artists are censored, imprisoned, threatened and even killed.

Since 3 November we have presented a monthly series of minidocumentaries that portraits the meeting between established Norwegian artists and threatened artists. We mark the end of the series with the celebration of Music Freedom Day, March 3rd 2019 at Kulturhuset in Oslo.

We have the freedom to lift up these stories. That is reason enough to do it.

GO TO WWW.SAFESERIES.NO FOR MORE BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND THE FULL VIDEO.

WOMEX 2018: MUSIC IS NOT FREE

At WOMEX 2018: MUSIC IS NOT FREE

October 15, 2018

Artist’s role in the social and political change to be debated during WOMEX this year. SafeMUSE is hosting a seminar in cooperation with Freemuse, and also including the Vietnamese artist Mai Khoi, putting artistic freedom on the agenda of the World Music Expo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Spain imprisoned 13 rappers last year – more musicians than any other country. In 2017, Freemuse registered 553 documented cases of violations of artistic freedom monitored in 78 countries in a near 50/50 split between countries in the global North and South. 202 cases in 57 countries connected to music. Freemuse warns of the emergence of a new global culture of silencing others, where artistic expression is being shut down in every corner of the globe, including in the traditionally democratic West.

It is clear that those in power attempt to shut off those with whom they disagree, dislike, fear or merely see as different, with violators sharing the will to silence others.

In Vietnam the pop-star Mai Khoi broke international headlines in 2016 after she became the first Vietnamese celebrity in history to nominate herself for the National Assembly (equivalent to congress) on a pro-democracy platform. Since then she has been banned from performing in her homeland. Her answer is “We give voice to the unspeakable, unlike other musicians here, we don’t ask for permission to perform or submit our lyrics to the censors.” She released her first album after being silenced in Vietnam on LIDIO earlier this year. “Dissent – Live at Phù sa Lab” with her band Mai Khoi Chem Gio, and a busy international activity, keeps up her her artistic activities – in spite of censorship and harassments.

The session will take a closer look at The State of Artistic Freedom 2018 report by Freemuse and discuss the artist’s role as change-maker in a harsh world.

Chaired by Jan Lothe Eriksen (SafeMUSE), with Dr. Srirak Plipat (Freemuse) and Vietnamese artist and dissident Mai Khoi (LIDIO/SafeMUSE).

WOMEX 18 Conference Session
DATE: 25 Oct 2018
TIME: 16:00 – 17:00
CITY/AREA: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
VENUE: Conference Room 1, INFECAR
WEB: WOMEX Conference web-listing

Mai Khoi and SafeMUSE record label LIDIO will also be present at the Music Norway stand #B69-B72 throughout WOMEX.

NPA’s SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE 2018

NPA's Solidarity Conference 2018: "Activism - from engagement to change"

September 18, 2018

Last weekend young solidarity workers of the Norwegian Peoples Aid was gathered at the annual youth conference at Utøya to learn and discuss how to take activism from engagement to creating actual change. Harstad’s Safe Haven Artist and Afghan traditional music star Hamid Sakhizada and activist wife and festival initiator Maryam Sharifi was invited to inspire and talk about their work, together with Jan Lothe Eriksen from SafeMUSE. Hamid talked about Hazara music, the problems related to being a Hazara celebrity in Afghanistan and how to secure the Hazara traditional music and culture in todays Afghanistan. Maryam was asked about her work with the Simorgh Theatre project raising awareness on human rights, women’s and minorities’ rights through theatre, and also the development of the annual A Night With Buddha Festival. The festival was set up in 2012 by Maryam and friends to remember the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan by Taliban in 2001 and the cultural world heritage connected to this. Both also talked about their continuous work in upholding their efforts to document and spread Hazara culture and tradition and also keeping up the Night With Buddha festival both in Afghanistan and also in Norway – from their new home in Harstad, Norway. The conversation was led by journalist Anne Gerd Grimsby Haarr.

The Friday evening was closed with an engaging concert by Hamid Sakhizada, ending with Syrian youths dancing to the Hazara music.

The annual Solidarity Conference is held at the beautiful innland island of Utøya, Tyrifjorden. For many years the site for the summer camp of the Norwegian Labour Party’s youth organization AUF, and at the 22 July 2011 the crime scene of the terrorist attack on Norway. 69 people killed and 66 were injured at Utøya, and all together the terrorist killed 77 people (in Oslo and at Utøya). Now Utøya is rehabilitated and is used as a summer camp site and a venue for seminars and courses throughout the year school.

ECM’s EUROPEAN FORUM ON MUSIC

ECM's European Forum on Music: FOCUSING ON ARTISTIC FREEDOM

June 20, 2018

From 7 to 10 June 2018 more than 100 representatives from over 20 European countries met at the 8th edition of the European Music Council’s (ECM) European Forum on Music in Oslo, Norway. Among them the new member SafeMUSE.

The theme of the conference was “Looking Back – Looking Forward. The Future of Europe’s Musical Roots”, and included a session on artistic freedom lead by Sara Whyatt, advisor of the Working Group Arts Rights Justice Europe and UNESCO Expert on freedom of artistic expression.

The panel-discussion focused on how to promote and protect music freedom today and what the current trends and challenges there are in doing so, further if there should there be limitations on this freedom (eg. recent UK banning of ‘Drill’ music and ‘ridiculing’ victims of terror in Spain), and not the least what kind of support is needed from musicians and music organizations to promote and protect music freedom – whether it is suppression in Europe, or supporting colleagues in trouble elsewhere.

The panel-discussion also touched upon the problems for artists “from The South” when not obtaining visas to get in security, and the increasingly difficult climate in Europe and the western world for artistic freedom. The panel included Dr. Srirak Plipat (Freemuse), Sina Winter (artist/ From the Vastland) and Jan Lothe Eriksen (SafeMUSE).

Broad artistic program

The artistic program of the conference featured a broad range of genres and performers, including the Norwegian Girls’ Choir and Swedish Sami singer Katarina Barruk plus Sarah-Jane Summers & Juhoni Silvola. In addition SafeMUSE was involved in presenting Sina Winter’s black metal band From the Vastland and Safe Have Harstad’s guest musician Hamid Sakhizada together with Marthe Valle, Håvard Lund and Håkon Mjåset Johansen. The latter in a cooperation with Culture Troms/ Troms County Council. All together a true celebration of musical diversity and high artistic quality.

5 Music Rights

For the EMC and its members the future will very much focus on the implementation and further development of the European Agenda for Music, reflecting the diverse topics and looking at how the

Agenda can be implemented practically also on a local level – some examples were discussed in the project presentations by EMC members.

The core objective of this European Agenda is that Access to music is a human right and that everyone, regardless of physical ability, gender, age, social, cultural or geographical origin, should be able to engage in music from childhood. And the number one formulated Music Right is “The right for all children and adults and the right for all musical artists to express themselves musically in all freedom.”

The idea for the European Agenda for Music emerged from discussions among EMC members in autumn 2012 about the future of music in Europe. Recognizing the need for action, the EMC reached out to music stakeholders across the continent. And the European Agenda for Music was developed out of a continent-wide consultation launched by the European Music Council (EMC). Reaching out to the entire music sector, it identifies the sector’s collective needs and sets out priorities for the future. A powerful confirmation of the European music sector’s desire to join together in the promotion of a common cause, the Agenda details which directions to pursue in order to ensure a music sector that remains strong, fair, innovative and diverse in a rapidly changing world.

MALMO SAFE HAVENS REPORT 2017

Malmö Safe Havens report 2017: - I don’t give them the chance to censor my songs in any way...

May 28, 2018

The Report from the Safe Havens Conference in Malmö 6-8 December last year is now available online. An extensive report by Michael Schmidt with photos by Stefan Landenberg and Ava Hanning, giving an in-depth insight to the conference themes last year ranging from how to combat hate speech and cyber-bullying, to how the Arab world’s artistic and intellectual Diasporas are dealing with the somewhat deflated atmosphere in the wake of the erosion of the promise of the so-called “Arab Spring”.

The main theme for the conference was “Artists and Movements”, and the days in Malmö started out with two artist presentations, and this is (in brief) from Michael Schmidt’s report:

As the trajectory of a falcon, underscored by the rhythm provided by musicians Nariman Hodjati and Masih Madani, elegant Iranian dancer-choreographer Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam spun dervish-like in a widening gyre, his svelte movements embracing the widening world of the arts, from the subatomic tracery of its paints and inks to the furthest reaches of its Diasporas. To the awed appreciation of his audience, Sahrokh’s feet stirred the dust motes on the floorboards of the onion-domed Moriska Paviljongen, site of the fourth gathering of Safe Havens: the Malmö Meetings. Initiated in 2013, Safe Havens is the premiere international gathering of activists in the field of art, as well as organisations that monitor the safety of creatives worldwide – some of which host artists in exile in extreme circumstances. Held in a contemplative, dynamic and engaged atmosphere over 6-8 December 2017, delegates and artists from across the world were delighted to hear that funding had been secured for a 2018 edition of the gathering.

Two key discussions – backed by stirring performances – demonstrated the universal, and in many cases, insidious nature of censorship against the arts. The theme was initiated by Norwegian cellist and SafeMUSE co-founder Jan Lothe Eriksen, interviewing Norwegian pop-star Pål Moddi Knutsen whose personal journey to a rather shocked awareness of the global prevalence of censorship was enlightening. Moddi’s album and book project Unsongs: Forbidden Stories tells the stories behind twelve outlawed songs from Mexico to Britain to Israel to Vietnam.

Moddi said the roots of this project that altered the direction of his career so profoundly was that over 2013-2014, based on the success of his sweet nostalgic pop tune House by the Sea, he had been touring the world launching an album in English and Norwegian.

“When I stepped into this world of politically-charged, controversial, angry, pointy music, it amazed me how far musicians were willing to go in order to get their message out – and we are of course at this conference because of some of these musicians who have really gone lengths to sing what they believe in… These are musicians with a message: that message was so strong I couldn’t resist it as a listener.”

Another artist in movement is the Vietnamese artist Mai Khoi. Michael Schmidt reports:

“After the nomination [to Parliament], I kind of moved to another way. I have many people who support me, but also many people resist me… After the nomination, I was banned from singing in public in Vietnam because the government doesn’t like my sounds and I don’t give them the chance to censor my songs in any way. Instead I give concerts in a private place but the police still come to my concerts and make difficulties for the owner of venue.” These discrete private concerts for a select group of only about 40 guests have been raided by armed and plain-clothes police who fine the venue host as a way of discouraging support for her. So Mai turned to Facebook where she is followed by more than 46,000 people, both to get her message out via live screenings of her unlicensed concerts and to give herself a profile that helps protect her.

The conference was hosted by the Culture Department of Malmö City and organized in partnership with the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) and SafeMUSE, the conference gathered organizations, activists, artists, and writers involved in issues concerning free speech, artistic freedom, and the protection of artists at risk.
