12 November, Album release of “Qaf” by Ghawgha @Nasjonal jazzscene, Oslo

12th of November, Album release of “Qaf” by Ghawgha at Nasjonal jazzscene in Oslo

On the 12th of November, Ghawgha will release her album “Qaf” at Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene in Oslo. “Qaf” can be translated as a place of refuge, or an inner home where one meets one’s true self.

The album is produced by OK World in cooperation with LIDIO/Safemuse. The founder and former general manager in Safemuse, Jan Lothe Eriksen, has since its inception, been passionately involved in the project. With a dedicated and talented group of artists and production team, this beautiful and important album is finally ready to be shared with the world.

The artists Anja Lauvdal and Marianna Sangita A Røe, who feature on the album, will be joining Ghawgha on stage for the release concert.

— Ultimately, “Qaf” is a quest for finding home, identity, and humanity; perhaps the place we all belong to and are seeking the peace hidden within these sounds and experiences.

Here are Ghawgha’s reflections on “Qaf” and the background for the album:

— The album “Qaf” is not just a musical work for me; it reflects years of search, observation, and experience. A journey that took me from my hometown to unfamiliar lands, traversing the streets where I grew up to the new borders I had to cross in search of a new identity. This album began as a personal journey but ultimately became the voice of those who share a similar experience; those who have faced loss and displacement in their quest for a home, and who continue to seek a new meaning for themselves.

— In this journey, I have often encountered the harsh realities of migration, displacement, and the endless search for a place called “home.” Each piece in “Qaf” reflects not only the moments experienced during my travels through Iran, Turkey, Greece, and Afghanistan, but also the stories of those who have lived through similar struggles and hopes. In tracks like “Sing for Me” and “Boat,” I revisit my memories; memories that have accompanied me from the streets of my hometown to the unfamiliar shores of the sea. “Sing for Me” evokes the longing for my childhood days and the feeling of being cast away from the environments that once were my home, while “Boat” portrays an eternal farewell in the heart of the night, an experience I have often heard through the voices of migrants and refugees, and has now become part of my own story.

— However, “Qaf” is not just my story. In fact, this voice goes beyond my personal experience. This album reflects lives and stories that we hear in every corner of the world; the stories of individuals who view the world through a similar lens and share the feeling of loss with me. Each piece, from “Kabul Beauty” to “Here,” is a collective voice; a voice I want to be heard, a voice for those like me, seeking a place they can call home.

— Ultimately, “Qaf” is a quest for finding home, identity, and humanity; perhaps the place we all belong to and are seeking the peace hidden within these sounds and experiences.

21 September, “Dancing Into Fire” – Audiovisual performance @National Opera, Oslo

21st of September, "Dancing into Fire” - audiovisual performance by Oddrun Lilja, Zhanna Gladko, Kringkastingsorkestret (KORK), Fatemeh Ekshtesari, Paal Nilssen-Love og Rolf Wallin.

Music, poetry and visual art combine in a performance about freedom, hope and exile, told from a female perspective. Dancing into Fire is a sweeping, large-scale audiovisual performance where the right to liberty and self-expression and the sacrifices it may involve, are urgent topics. At the heart of Dancing into Fire lies the experience of three female artists from very different political backgrounds: Islamic theocracy, patriarchal dictatorship and idealistic social democracy.

A jail sentence hangs over Iranian poet Fatemeh Ekhtesari. Visual artist Zhanna Gladko left Belarus after finding it impossible to work as a female artist in a deeply patriarchal environment where culture is heavily censored. Zhanna lives in Norway supported by the organisation Safemuse, an organisation working for artists that have been threatened, persecuted or censored, Fatemeh is a City of Refugee artist in Lillehammer through ICORN. Guitarist /composer Oddrun Lilja grew up in the comparatively safe social reality of Iceland and Norway, but travelling the world with her music has opened her eyes to the limitations on self-expression that her peers experience elsewhere. She has created the music together with composer Rolf Wallin.

Performed by Kringkastingsorkestret and soloists, Dancing into Fire is a tribute to all artists who are persecuted for their work.

Saturday, 21 September, at 17:00–18:00 – Den Norske Opera & Ballett

14 September, Concert by Pouya Pour-Amin at the Ultima festival @Trekanten, Oslo

14th of September, Concert by Pouya Pour-Amin for Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival at Trekanten in Oslo

Safemuse organisation Norway

Pouya at Ultimafestivalen / Photo: Nabeeh Samaan

A special club night for the head as well as the feet. In a commission from Ultima and the Trekanten club venue, Norway’s Fakethias (aka Mathias Humlen) will play with visuals by Felix Scheele. Following a Spellemann prize nomination for his 2023 album Core Echo, Fakethias has become increasingly interested in combining digital noise with live instruments, and enhancing the specific qualities of the space where he is performing, such as the modernistic concrete architecture of the Trekanten-building.

The night also includes a set by Iranian musician Pouya Pour-Amin, making his Norwegian debut. Pour-Amin is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and actor from Tehran, Iran. His harrowing album of abrasive electronic meditations, Prison Episodes, from 2019, explored the experiences of a political prisoner from incarceration to breaking point. The influence of drama and storytelling is evident in his solo album, “Prison Episodes,” where his passion for narrative comes to life. He has been residing in Hvitsten since June 2024 as part of the Safemuse Artist residency.

Saturday, 14 September, at 23:00–01:00 Trekanten

FRI KUNST 2023 – under autoritære regimer

FRI KUNST - under autoritære regimer: 3. mars

February 8, 2023

FRI KUNST – under autoritære regimer, fredag 3. mars 2023.

FRI KUNST / MUSIC FREEDOM DAY 2020

A ONE-WEEK CELEBRATION OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM ALL OVER NORWAY MARCH 2020

January 28, 2020

SafeMUSE together with partners FreemuseNOKU – Norwegian Culture Forum, NTO – Association of Norwegian Theaters and Orchestras and a long list of Norwegian artists associations, arts organizations and institutions are inviting for a celebration of ‘Fri Kunst’, Artistic Freedom 2-8 March 2020 all over Norway.

Artistic freedom is under an increasing pressure, and artists of all disciplines and genres are under threat, being persecuted and censored, prosecuted and imprisoned, harassed and even killed. In Europe this is also a growing problem, with Spain being the country globally imprisoning most musicians – both in 2018 and 2019 (Freemuse: The State of Artistic Freedom).

In Norway artistic freedom has been up to debate recently, with several cased where artists has been met with threats and accusations.

On the basis of this, SafeMUSE has taken the initiative to expand the annual marking of Music Freedom Day 3 March in Norway into a national celebration of Artistic Freedom. We are inviting institutions, event-organizers, clubs, galleries, theaters, orchestras, ensembles, organizations, unions and all others who wants to join for a full week of concerts, exhibitions, performances, shows, seminars and discussions to focus on as many aspects and perspectives to artistic freedom as possible. Either to dedicate the event or concert already planned to Artistic Freedom, or to organize something especially related to this topic during this week.

Through this we will gain a general increased awareness, consciousness and knowledge of the importance of Artistic Freedom. The idea is to coordinate whatever will happen during this week under a joint tag and umbrella, and through coordinated action, raise the awareness.

IMC’s WORLD FORUM ON MUSIC 2019

IMC’s World Forum on Music 2019, Paris:
STANDING FOR ARTISTIC FREEDOM – IN SOLIDARITY

October 7, 2019

During the 6th World Forum on Music focusing on the five music rights, SafeMUSE Project Manager Jan Lothe Eriksen’s gave an introduction to the First Music Right, and all participants raised in solidarity with artistic freedom fighters all over the world, for the Iranian composer, musician and activist Mehdi Rajabian – not able to leave Iran; Iranian singer songwriter Farzane Zamen – exiled in Glasgow, UK; and Ramy Essam – touring the world but not able to return to Egypt.

The International Music Council’s 70th anniversary was marked by the 6th World Forum on Music in Paris last week, focusing on the Five Music Rights. The last day of the conference, coinciding with The International Music Day, the focused was on the First Music Right, the right for all children and adults to express themselves musically in all freedom.

Together with Ian Smith, President of the European Music Council, Jan Lothe Eriksen gave an introduction focusing on the harsh story of Mehdi Rajabian, Iranian composer, musician and founder of the website Barg music, an alternative music distributor in Iran. Barg Music was the main medium broadcasting alternative music in the country and had introduced more than 100 music albums and thousands of single records by Iranian alternative musicians, as well as female singers, to Iranian audiences, before being shut down by Revolutionary Guards in 2013.

Mehdi Rajabian was arrested pursuing illegal musical activities by Iranian security forces on 5 October 2013 in his office and transferred to Ward 2A of Evin Prison, and was sentenced to more than two months in solitary confinement. When Mehdi Rajabian was arrested, he was recording “Research Album of History of Iran narrated by Setar”. His personal studio, all recordings, hard drives of recorded music were confiscated and the project became silent.

Following this came a long story of imprisonment, hunger strike to be given medical treatment, and an international campaign sparked by Freemuse and followed by Amnesty, United Nations Special Rapporteurs on cultural rights, International PEN and many more, causing great international attention and media coverage. More than 20,000 artists from all corners of the world joined the campaign.

The case of Mehdi Rajabian was investigated in summer 2015 in Branch 28 of the Revolutionary Court by Judge Mughiseh, and finally he was charged of unauthorized art activity, insulting religious sanctities and advertisement against the regime. He was sentenced for six-year prison and fine. This sentence was on appeal to three years imprisonment in Branch 54 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court and three years of suspended sentence. He has served his three years in prison, and is now serving the last three years. He cannot leave the country, but is still artistically very active.

In March this year he released the album Middle Eastern, a unique project that brought together nearly 100 musicians from across 12 countries.

Mehdi Rajabian´s case is unique. But he is no alone being imprisoned, persecuted, harassed or censored for making music, unfortunately.

Iranian singer songwriter Farzane Zamen, present during the conference in Paris, giving a speech and performing, has her own story.

Egyptian artist and rocker Ramy Essam, also present during the conference in Paris, giving a speech and performing, has his own story. And there are many, many more…

Jan Lothe Eriksen closed his introduction saying:

– Being an artist, censored, harassed, persecuted, prosecuted and imprisoned is in very lonely and terribly difficult situation. So therefore, I ask you, all participants of the 6th IMC World Forum on Music,

supporting the First Right, Freedom of Expression – ‘The right for all to express themselves musically in all freedom’, please stand up…:

– Mehdi, Farzane, Ramy, and all artistic freedom fighters – You are not alone.

WOMEX 2018: MUSIC IS NOT FREE

At WOMEX 2018: MUSIC IS NOT FREE

October 15, 2018

Artist’s role in the social and political change to be debated during WOMEX this year. SafeMUSE is hosting a seminar in cooperation with Freemuse, and also including the Vietnamese artist Mai Khoi, putting artistic freedom on the agenda of the World Music Expo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Spain imprisoned 13 rappers last year – more musicians than any other country. In 2017, Freemuse registered 553 documented cases of violations of artistic freedom monitored in 78 countries in a near 50/50 split between countries in the global North and South. 202 cases in 57 countries connected to music. Freemuse warns of the emergence of a new global culture of silencing others, where artistic expression is being shut down in every corner of the globe, including in the traditionally democratic West.

It is clear that those in power attempt to shut off those with whom they disagree, dislike, fear or merely see as different, with violators sharing the will to silence others.

In Vietnam the pop-star Mai Khoi broke international headlines in 2016 after she became the first Vietnamese celebrity in history to nominate herself for the National Assembly (equivalent to congress) on a pro-democracy platform. Since then she has been banned from performing in her homeland. Her answer is “We give voice to the unspeakable, unlike other musicians here, we don’t ask for permission to perform or submit our lyrics to the censors.” She released her first album after being silenced in Vietnam on LIDIO earlier this year. “Dissent – Live at Phù sa Lab” with her band Mai Khoi Chem Gio, and a busy international activity, keeps up her her artistic activities – in spite of censorship and harassments.

The session will take a closer look at The State of Artistic Freedom 2018 report by Freemuse and discuss the artist’s role as change-maker in a harsh world.

Chaired by Jan Lothe Eriksen (SafeMUSE), with Dr. Srirak Plipat (Freemuse) and Vietnamese artist and dissident Mai Khoi (LIDIO/SafeMUSE).

Mai Khoi and SafeMUSE record label LIDIO will also be present at the Music Norway stand #B69-B72 throughout WOMEX.
