‘Historias’ nominated to Gullsekken 2021 award

Earlier this month, ‘Historias’ was selected as one of the nominees to the cultural award Gullsekken 2021 for the category Best Tour Production. Together with Piero Issa, Jon Tombre, Fahil Anweri, Even Børsum and Nicolai Lopez, Safemuse’s resident artist Carlos Catun (aka. Gato) has been on tour and visited schools across Norway with a personal and dynamic production combining documentary screening (“Bboy for life”, 2012), and live performance and conversation with the students. ‘Historias’ is centred around the intertwined stories of three dancers and how it ultimately brought them together.

The Guatemalan breakdancer Gato (Carlos Catun) brings his experiences from life in the streets of Guatemala City into the performance. Gato was forced to leave his home country following death threats from Guatemalan street gangs. After several years on the move, his long journey to safety finally came to an end when Gato, in 2019, moved to Norway as a Safemuse resident artist. Over the years, Gato has established close ties with the breakdance milieu in Norway and engaged in numerous collaborative projects with other artists and dancers. Safemuse resident coordinator Nicolai Lopez has been an important engine behind the ‘Gato-process’.

‘Historias’ was launched as part of the artistic program for Den Kulturelle Skolesekken (DKS) (loosely translated as “the cultural school bag”) – a national scheme established in 2001 to promote and disseminate art and culture to children and youth throughout Norway. Gullsekken 2021 recognises the achievements of art- and cultural practitioners in Norway, and the nomination of ‘Historias’ is a testament to the production’s high artistic quality and impact on its audiences.

“We were actually called by many schools afterwards because they had to tell us how intensely the performance had moved their students.”

-DKS nomination statement

In their nomination statement for ‘Historias’, DKS wrote:

“It was a powerful experience for the students who received a visit by the production team to first see the gripping documentary, and then meet one of the main characters live in the classroom, see him dance and hear him tell his story. We were actually called by many schools afterwards because they had to tell us how intensely the performance had moved their students. That is not a daily occurrence for us in the DKS-team.”

On the 20th of October, DKS announced the two winners of Gullsekken 2021: Marja Mortensson Trio and Lost and Found Productions. Safemuse congratulates the winners, as well as the nominees – all of whom have effectively reached out to youth in their own unique ways, created magical cultural experiences in schools and provided students with an opportunity for reflection through music and performing arts.

Iranian composer Mehdi Rajabian risks rearrest after album release

Iranian composer Mehdi Rajabian risks rearrest after album release

October 7, 2021

- No power can stop the freedom of music

Iranian composer and musician Mehdi Rajabian spent ten months in his basement in Iran where he worked on his most recent musical project, the album ‘Coup of Gods’. For many years, Rajabian experienced imprisonment, bans, solitary confinement and hunger strikes. – “I couldn’t even play an instrument on my album. I could only compose and arrange. I did it just to say that no power can stop the freedom of music”, Rajabian said in an interview with Billboard Media (15. September 2021).

Rajabian was arrested in 2013 and sat three months in isolation before he was released on bail. In 2015 he was once again jailed after having recorded the album ‘The History of Iran Narrated by Setar.’ Rajabian was alleged for having distributed unlicensed music by Iranian singers from outside the country, some of which contained lyrics and messages that the authorities considered to be political or cover taboo subjects. According to Amnesty International’s report from 2016, Rajabian’s trial lasted only three minutes before he was sentenced for having ‘offended Islam’, ‘spread propaganda against the system’ and conducted ‘illegal audio-visual activities.’

“Silence in the face of oppression is complicity with the oppressor. I cannot be silent.”

– Mehdi Rajabian, interview in Billboard

Mehdi Rajabian’s new recording will be available on all major streaming services, and the album has been submitted for Grammy nomination consideration.

Read more about his story and check out the album teaser on Billboard’s website.

A Conversation with Maryam Sharifi

THE SOLIDARITY CONFERENCE 2021: A conversation with Maryam Sharifi

September 30, 2021
In a conversation with Safemuse's Akari Izumi Kvamme, Maryam Sharifi shared her experiences and reflections as an Afghani woman and cultural activist. Photo: Ortenheim Photography.

Earlier this month, the Norwegian Peoples Aid Solidarity Youth’s annual conference took place on the island of Utøya. At the Solidarity Conference 2021, dozens of passionate youth from all over Norway gathered to discuss local and global politics, share their reflections with invited guests and meet old and new friends. On the 11th of September, Safemuse attended the conference together with Maryam Sharifi who shared her story and experiences from life as a woman and cultural activist in Afghanistan.

Life as a woman in Afghanistan

Maryam Sharifi is an afghani cultural activist and festival organiser. She grew up in a war-torn Afghanistan during the Taliban’s first reign of terror in the nineties and early 2000s. It was a time when girls were not allowed to attend school and women were denied participation in public life. Maryam and her sisters stayed at home all day to weave carpets by hand in order to help her family make a living. Although the Taliban’s loss of power in 2001 opened up to some new opportunities that Maryam previously did not have, life as a young woman continued to be challenging. Recently, with the country once again having fallen into the hands of the Taliban, Maryam is increasingly worried about the situation for girls and women in Afghanistan. “Back then it was difficult to work, but now it is impossible,” she says.

“Back then it was difficult to work, but now it is impossible.”

Maryam is concerned about the situation we see today, the future of Afghani people, and women, artists, journalists and human rights activists in particular. She describes the desperation expressed by friends and family back home whom she is in touch with. “It just makes me so sad. Many people have contacted me to ask if I can help them. I have an artist friend who had to quit painting and just stay at home.” Maryam is concerned that the situation is going to get worse. “I don’t know why so many people are referring to a so-called ‘New Taliban’ – there is nothing new about them, they have not changed, they continue to abuse journalists, persecute opponents and carry on as they want.” Although Maryam finds it difficult to see much hope for the near future of Afghanistan, she honours the many strong women and civilians who risk their lives by publicly speaking up or taking to the streets to demonstrate against the Taliban regime and the limits imposed on girls and women.

A Night with Buddha

In 2001, the Taliban destroyed two world heritage listed Buddha-statues, carved into a mountainside, in Bamiyan. Twelve years later, in 2013, Maryam started the festival “A Night with Buddha” to commemorate the statues, create dialogue and raise awareness around the importance of culture, art and identity. Maryam describes the event as an attack on the identity of the people and felt it was important to oppose the mindset of the Taliban and the systematic attacks on art, artists, women and human rights. Although it was possible for a woman to organise the festival as a woman, the challenges were numerous and many groups attempted to oppose and hinder the festival from taking place.

Ethnic discrimination and power-scrambles

Maryam describes long-seated tensions and power-scramble between the four largest ethnic groups in Afghanistan. “My husband worked with Hazara-music, and so many reacted negatively to his work. They asked questions about why he was playing Hazara-music or singing in his local dialect. Our music, our faces and our dialect were haram (shame).” Hamid received many threats and was attacked on several occasions. It culminated when he was attempted run over by a car. Hamid survived, but broke his arm and was not able to play his instrument for two years.

“Our music, our faces and our dialect were haram.”

Moving to Norway

Maryam and her husband Hamid Sakizada were forced to leave Afghanistan when it got too dangerous to stay there. In 2013 they were able to find refuge in Harstad, a small city in the north of Norway, as part of the ICORN program. Although it has been difficult to be so far away from her family, the support from Safemuse, ICORN, the municipality of Harstad and locals has helped Mariam and Hamid to rebuild their lives in Norway.  Mariam has been able to put her experiences from Afghanistan to good use and has for the past two years been involved with the local cultural festival, “Festspillene i Nord-Norge”.

Speak of Afghanistan

When asked by a youth participant about what young people outside Afghanistan can do to help, Maryam answers: “I always say, don’t be silent. Speak about Afghanistan. Speak of the women who don’t have the same rights as us. Speak of the children who are not allowed to go to school. The Taliban has so much power, but we need to raise our voices, and there is so much power in youth. So, I beg you, speak of Afghanistan.”

“The Taliban has so much power, but we need to raise our voices, and there is so much power in youth. So, I beg you, speak of Afghanistan.”

In solidarity with Afghanistan

IN SOLIDARITY WITH AFGHANISTAN

September 24, 2021
Demonstrators gathered outside the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Photo: Soraia Khawari

AN APPEAL FROM THE SAFEMUSE CHAIR OF THE BOARD

On Saturday 11th of September 2021, Safemuse attended a demonstration outside the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the political overturn and seizure of Kabul by Taliban in August. The unfolding of fear, panic, economic collapse and consequent hardships has led to a widespread concern for civilians, artists, human rights activists and a democracy under threat. Together with a large number of organisations, artists, political representatives and individuals, we gathered to mark our solidarity with Afghanistan and its people.

Chairman of Safemuse, Anders Hovind. Photo: Bodil Diesen / CREO

Anders Hovind, the chair of the Safemuse board, made the following appeal:

Almost four years ago, we at Safemuse helped the Afghan musician Hamid Sakhizada and his wife, as Norway’s second musician in the Cities of Refuge program, get a safe stay in Harstad. Despite a great career as a Hazara musician in his home country, he was threatened and violently harassed by religious fanatics and other groups who opposed the Hazara minority. Two of Hamid’s music students were kidnapped and tortured by the Taliban. One was killed. And so if this was four years ago, what do you think the situation is today? Pictures of destroyed cultural schools with smashed musical instruments testify that Taliban’s terror regime has not changed significantly in the last twenty years.

Here in Norway we are used to thinking of art as decoration and entertainment, but in many other countries and especially in Afghanistan, this is a battle of life and death. Artist and filmmaker Deeyah Khan says: – If you want to understand the importance of music and art, you have to look at what oppressive regimes do: The first to get shot are artists and intellectuals. Dictators understand that art unites us, makes us rise up, is what makes us human, gives us hope and makes us feel alive. To control people, they have to get rid of art.

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ new strategy for freedom of expression in foreign- and development politics, which was put forth this summer, provided an important signal to raise the awareness of- and the efforts for artists as human rights defenders and as activists. This work must be continued, the framework must be expanded, and the quota for receiving refugees must make room for real international solidarity. Not least when we now see the situation for musicians and artists in Afghanistan!

Norway must also fulfill its obligations regarding the issuance of visas to artists from the south in line with the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity. Article 16 of the Convention states that artists and cultural workers from developing countries shall be given priority in the granting of visas. This article is systematically violated by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration.

In the dramatic and acute situation that has arisen in Afghanistan, both authorities and politicians must understand that humanity is more important than opinion polls. Vulnerable groups in Afghanistan must be given a safe haven abroad and Norway must be in the driver’s seat for granting visas to Afghans whose lives are threatened.

In Harstad, Hamid and his family have been given a safe home. He is an enrichment for Norwegian cultural life with his concerts and record releases. It is simply a shame that his people don’t get to enjoy an artist who now gets to unfold his work without fear of reprisals. On the other side: by accepting more artists like Hamid we can perhaps make our small contribution so that important cultural heritages are not lost.

This is the time to act. The people of Afghanistan needs our active support.

Gladnyhet: En million kroner til residensordning i Oslo

Oslo Kommunes budsjettforslag 2022: En million til Safemuse residensordning

September 22, 2021

Daglig leder i Safemuse, Jan Lothe Eriksen. Foto: Even Finsrud / Musikk-Kultur

Announcement: New staff member in Safemuse

NEW STAFF MEMBER AT SAFEMUSE

September 21, 2021
Photo: Kristoffer Archetti Stølen

MEET OUR NEW TEAM MEMBER

We are glad to announce that Akari Izumi Kvamme is the newest member to the Safemuse team!

Akari holds a BA in political science from the University of British Columbia in Canada and a MSc in international relations from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Her master thesis explored the nexus between international border politics, aesthetics and creative resistance. Over the years, Akari has been involved in a number of NGOs and grassroots initiatives, such as No to Nuclear Weapons Norway (Nei til Atomvåpen), ICAN Norway, Oslo World festival and the youth project Ezinne Athletics. In 2014 she co-directed the short documentary Caminando por la Habana / Walking through Havana, which was awarded a prize at Raindance Festival. Akari recently enrolled in part-time studies in film- and video art.

Q: What does artistic freedom mean to you?

Artistic freedom enables artists to openly and freely imagine, create and share their art without fear of censorship and persecution. It is a vital freedom of expression and indispensable in building diverse and vibrant democracies. The unique contributions of artists around the world form a dynamic force that enrichens, moves and inspires society at large. Art can also provide a channel to pose important societal questions and challenge destructive norms, politics and power structures. Where artistic freedom is under threat, it must be vigorously defended and protected. I look forward to working with an organisation that actively promotes and supports artists at risk and their right to safely and freely express their art!

Akari is entering a 80% position as an adviser in Safemuse and begun her work on the 1st of September 2021.

Safe Havens Global Stream 2020

Safe Havens Global Stream 2020: A BROAD VARIETY OF ARTISTIC INTERVENTIONS

December 18, 2020

Safe Havens is a once-a-year conference opportunity where arts and human rights activists share and use their experience. This year organized as a two-stage series of online seminars under the title Safe Havens Global Stream. Prioritising artists, smaller organisations and individuals working in the field of artistic freedom and human right.

Phase one of the conference took place between 10 and 13 November with a series of workshops. Then, based on issues and questions that came up during these workshops, phase two of the conference took place on 3 December 2020 with two round-table discussions.

A very fruitful and inspiring gathering all together, although this year as webinars on the internet. 164 registrations in November, and during the streamed round table-sessions 3. December we registered 250 visitors through the streaming partner HowlRound, 154 live views on Facebook, and 214 views on the conference Vimeo-stream. 18 nations with US on top including 17 US states.

Museum of Movement in Malmö, Sweden, was the main organizer (closing down 31 December due to a total budget cut from the Ministry of Culture in Sweden !) with Safemuse as close partner, and a long row of supporters within the Safe Havens international network.

A comprehensive report is on its way.

INSPIRING ARTISTIC INTERVENTIONS

Safemuse organized a bouquet of artistic interventions presented both during the November and December sessions.

And as a ‘Great Thank You’ to all Safemuse’s friends and partners for this odd year’s cooperation, and not the least a Grateful Gesture to all the artists we have collaborated with throughout 2020, we’ll bring you here the artistic interventions presented during Safe Havens Global Stream 2020. Some strong and beautiful artistic interventions from artists with very different backgrounds, but also a common ground in the urge to express themselves freely – in spite of great difficulties.

Hamid Sakhizada is a highly acknowledged musician from Afghanistan, specialized in the Hazara traditional music and the instrument dambura.
Hamid has a large fan base in Afghanistan and abroad, and has participated in the 2012 ABU Annual Song Contest and Afghan Star, the equivalent to the Idol song contest. He has performed in several countries, as well as having produced three albums.
Hamid’s all-consuming passion for the Hazara music has cost him dearly. The Hazara-people is a minority in Afghanistan, and due to his tireless efforts to preserve the tradition, Hamid became subject to a steady campaign of threats and violent harassment from groups who oppose the minority Hazara culture, as well as from religious traditionalists.
Hamid was forced to leave his country, and in 2016 he came as guest musician to Safe Music Haven Harstad, Norway, where he still lives and continues to perform his music openly and keeping the Hazara tradition alive.
The album Dai Raft was released in Nov 2019 (LIDIO/Safemuse). With help from an all-star team of musicians Hamid brings old traditions alive through new collaborations, interpretations and expressions. And his artistic intervention during Safe Havens Global Stream is from the release concert of Dai Raft.

Mai Khoi is a Vietnamese celebrated pop star, singer and musician. She has been playing music professionally since she was 12 – in her father’s wedding band, and in 2010 she was awarded the Vietnam Television Song and Album of the Year Award, the highest award for song writing in her country. Her music is distinct in terms of its emotional range, her wide vocal register and the distinct tonal qualities of her voice.
Mai Khoi is somewhat of an anomaly for a celebrity in a Communist country like Vietnam, for having spoken out about sexuality, LGBT rights and violence against women. And in 2016 Mai Khoi broke international headlines after she became the first Vietnamese celebrity in history to nominate herself for the National Assembly on a pro-democracy platform.
After this she has been banned from performing in Vietnam, harassed and detained. Even the closed recording session of her first album after changing from pop icon to artist activist, with only invited friends and supporters in the studio, the police showed up and obstructed her work (‘Dissent’ LIDIO/Safemuse 2018).
The music Mai Khoi will perform during Safe Havens Global Stream is from a project that was planned premiered in Oslo in may this year. Together with Norwegian musician and composer/ music arranger Julie Ofelia Østrem Ossum the stage production ‘Mai Khoi Song Cycle’ is still in the making, with Mai Khoi in New York and Ofelia in Oslo – due to corona. So, this is a sneak peek into what will be on stage when the world again opens up after the pandemic.
Mai Khoi is for the time being an Artist Protection Fund Fellow.

Yasmine Baramawy is an Egyptian musician, sound artist, Oud performer and composer based in Malmö. She develops an original sound universe around her practice of the Oud (modified and augmented by a low string) but also around concrete music and other electronic experiments. She plays one of the world’s oldest instruments yet she manages to work with a curious blend of different approaches and genres like oriental, rock and classic music. She builds sound installations mingling with poetry and spoken word added to her Oud live manipulations, her approach is characterized by a permanent sound research exploring both the acoustic tradition of the oud and the adventurous and transversal sound practices. She composed and performed live with experimental and dance theatre plays and wrote scores for film production in the alternative scene in Egypt.

Confess is originally an Iranian heavy metal band. They are known for having faced charges in Iran for their music, in which they expressed anti-religious and anti-government views. Confess in Iran played together for 10 years, and released 2 albums, an EP and several singles.
Khosravi and Ilkhani were arrested in November 2015 and held in solitary confinement. At that time, they potentially faced execution after being charged with blasphemy for “writing Satanic music and speaking to foreign radio stations”. In July 2019, the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tehran handed Khosravi and Ilkhani a combined sentence of 14 1⁄2 years in prison for the crime of playing metal. Khosravi was also sentenced to 74 lashes. Nikan managed to escape the country and landed in Safe Music Haven Harstad, and a while later, it also became possible for Arash to come to Norway. They have teamed up with by Norwegian musicians, and are developing their distinct and powerful metal music and are planning a tour in the spring of 2021.

Lavon Volski an icon of Belarusian rock music, a cultural figure, an author. His songs are anthems of those who dream of a democratic and free Belarus. Thus, Volski since many years has been on the regime’s infamous “black list” of artists never played on national radio and banned from performing. Lavon Volski has created several successful solo projects and he founded bands such as Mroya, N.R.M., Zet and Krambambulya, which all made a huge impact on the development of a Belarusian-speaking rock music and of Belarusian culture in general.
Lavon is awarded numerous musical awards, and he received the Freemuse Award 2016.

Lavon Volski: ‘Air Balloon’ & ‘Enemies of the people’

Safemuse Artist Touring High Schools

SAFEMUSE RESIDENCE ARTIST TOURING HIGH SCHOOLS

December 9, 2020

Safemuse residence artist, Guatemalan break dancer Gato (Carlos Catun), together with colleagues Nicolai López and Piero Issa, just finished their premiere DKS (Den kulturelle skolesekken) tour in Trøndelag, “BBoy for life”.

The production, a combination of screening of the documentary “BBoy for life”, live performance and a following conversation with the studens, was presented for High schools in Trøndelag, Norway. The student’s response was overwhelming. The tour had a big impact on everyone involved:

“It’s amazing to see the faces of the youths brighten when they see the documentary about Gatos fight for artistic freedom, and realize that they actually get to meet Gato after the film. During the show the students gave full attention to what was happening”, comments fellow performer and Safemuse coordinator Nicolai López.

The tour followed a week residence at SEANSE (Senter for kunstproduksjon) in Volda, where the artists together with film maker Fahil Anweri, set designer Even Børsum and director Jon Tombre got to work and prepare the production. The production consists of the documentary “BBoy for life” and an audio visual performance that shows the story after this documentary was made. The show includes a dialogue with the students where they get to reflect and share what they themselves fight for, and get the possibility to ask Gato direct questions.

Experiences from the tour

When the students got the possibility to share what they themselves are fighting for, they presented a series of topics: friends and family, the environment, equality and justice for all, self-determination over your own body, fight against racism and the fight for freedom of expression.

The questions for Gato varied from political questions about Guatemala and Latin Amerika, to what football team he supports. The questions that repeatedly came up were:

How is the crew Gato dansed with in the movie now doing in Guatemala? Are they still dancing?

Do you have any contact with your family?

How can we help?

A lot of tears where shed during the time they spent with the students. If not for Covid19, there would have been a lot of hugs. And not hugging was something the artists found the most hard during the tour.

Gato’s message for the students:

“Norway is a land full of possibilities, possibilities for children and youth I never could have had if not coming here. I do hope you see these possibilities and seize them! You can become whatever you want!”

Safe Havens – A global network meeting

The annual Safe Havens conference is a global network meeting. The conference is organized in a process of collaboration between artists, different cultural operators and organizations, where focus is directed on the connection between art, culture and human rights.

The conference is a way of visualizing the significant position of culture and academia in human rights advocacy and moving towards sharing and using knowledge between artists, cultural operators, scholars and major human rights and cultural organizations.

Fredrik Elg, initiator of the conference, said: “We are artists, writers, musicians, activists and administrators from all over the world. We are in this together. And, the Safe Havens conference is the place where we come together. The conference is not a step towards establishing a new formal network, it is an open forum for all of us who see a point in meeting, interacting and sharing with new and old friends in order to learn from each other. It is a cosmopolitan space – a platform – where new collaborations take shape.”

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE MEETS ENGAGED YOUTH

October 10, 2020

DANCE, FREEDOM AND THE POWER OF ART

For the fourth year Safemuse visited Solidaritetsungdommen, Norwegian People Aids’ youth organization, at their annual seminar at Utøya.

“Gato has been dancing since he was fifteen. For him dancing isn´t just a way of expression, but the way of expressing himself. When he dances others listen, they stop. They see the possibility of a different world. That is why he is dangerous. Because Hope is dangerous. Because youths with hope are youths that create change. And those who don’t want change are those in power. They are threatened by Gato, by dance, by arts’ ability to make people feel.”

Celina Jerman Bright-Taylor, Safemuse

«People change the world» is the slogan of Norwegian People Aid and Solidaritetsungdommen. Safemuse visited their seminar at Utøya a weekend in September, to talk about the importance of art and artistic freedom, and how art contributes to changing the world.

We screened the documentary B-Boys for life that documents the life of our artist in residence Carlos «Gato» Catuns’ break dance crew in Guatemala City. The documentary describes the brutality of the gangs, but also shows the power they have in society.

As well as showing the documentary Gato also participated in a conversation together with Nicolai Lopez and Celina Jerman Bright Taylor from Safemuse about the importance of art as an alternative to criminality. He spoke about how dancing changed his life and how it gives youths an opportunity to find a community somewhere else than amongst the gangs that control large parts of Guatemala.

After the conversation we had the opportunity to continue the talk with engaged youths that use their spare time to contribute to different parts of Norwegian Peoples Aids’ work. It was moving to experience Utøya filled with young people that want to create change. It gave hope for change also in Guatemala.

Utøya is an island in the Tyrifjorden lake about 38 km northwest of Oslo city centre. Utøya is owned by the Workers’ Youth League (AUF), a youth group associated with the Labour Party in Norway.

On 22 July 2011, a mass shooting took place at the AUF’s summer youth camp, where over 500 young people were staying. The perpetrator, Anders Behring Breivik arrived at the island after setting off a car bomb in the Government Quarter in Oslo.

Combined, the attacks in Oslo and Utøya left 77 dead, with 69 killed on the island.
